Event Information:

🚣‍♂️ Ahoy there, mateys! Get ready for a nautical adventure at our Cardboard Boat Race on June 29th from 10 am to 2 pm. Kick off the morning from 10 am to 12 pm by showing up and building your own seaworthy vessels with materials we provide, including cardboard and two rolls of duct tape (bring extra if you need it!). From 12 pm to 1 pm, let the judging begin in person, where boats will be scored based on decorations and creativity, and from 1 pm to 2 pm, it’s race time! This year, we’ve introduced a point system, ensuring a fair chance for all participants to win. Earn points for decorations, crossing the finish line, and seize the opportunity for bonus points through Best Dressed, Guest Appearance, and Team Anthem challenges. It’s a day of high-seas fun, creativity, and friendly competition – may the best boats set sail! 🏁🚢🌊

We will also be doing a sandcastle-building contest during or before the event to give spectators something to do! We encourage spectators to bring squirt guns for the end of the races. We are going to have a “battleship” so we are providing water balloons to the boats and the shore can bring water guns to partake in the activities.

Date & Location:

Saturday, June 29th, 2024 at the Phase 1 Beach

Race Day Schedule:

• 10 am – 12 pm: Show up and build boats. Materials supplied.
• 12 – 1 pm: Judging begins (in person)
• 1 – 2 pm: Race time!

Basic Rules:

• 4 people must ride in the boat – 1 must be an adult
• Ages 12 & under must have a lifejacket
• Must go around buoy and back to shore
• Winners will be determined by a point system

Point System:

• This year, we will be scoring boats using a point system. This allows all participants an equal chance of winning.
  • Decorations – 1^st 25 points, 2^nd 15 points, 3^rd 10 points, everyone else 5 points – voting will be in person.
  • Finish Line – 1^st 30 points, 2^nd 15 points, 3^rd 10 points, everyone else 5 points – participants will get points for getting their boat to the finish line with all members on the raft.

Bonus Points:

• Best Dressed – 10 points – The team with the best outfits will earn additional points, this will be determined by Rec Staff.
• Guest Appearance – 10 points – Convince a park representative to be your team’s cheerleader (board members, PSO, golf course, administrative staff, park & garden, or maintenance – cannot be related to you)
• Team Anthem – 10 points – Come up with a team chant, song, or slogan to sing while rowing out.

Construction Materials:

Construction materials will be provided this year!

We will provide cardboard and two rolls of duct tape. If you think you will need more please bring it with you.
