Lake Monterey Dam Project Update | August 20, 2024
We continue to provide updates on the Lake Monterey Dam Project, a crucial initiative involving Allegan County, Salem Township, and Sandy Pines. This project is focused on ensuring the safety and long-term functionality of our dam, with significant construction work scheduled to begin soon.
Project Overview
As previously mentioned, the contractor for the dam project has been selected, and construction is set to commence on Monday, September 9th, 2024. Once construction begins, the roadway over the dam will be closed to park traffic, and it will remain impassable until the completion of the project, which is expected by early November.
Impact on Lake Access and Boat Launch
We strongly advise all members utilizing boat services to consider removing their boats from the lake earlier than usual. Construction may affect lake levels and access, making it difficult to retrieve boats later in the season.
However, the construction crew does not anticipate needing to close the boat launch during the project. While the road will be closed and access across the dam will be restricted until the embankment is rebuilt, we do not foresee any issues with the launch itself.
Please monitor your boat’s position on the lakeshore to ensure it remains safe and accessible.
We do still recommend all boats be removed from the lake by Monday, September 9th.
Construction Zone and Safety Precautions
As the project moves forward, significant activity will occur around the dam. For your safety, please avoid the construction zone entirely. The contractor will begin by removing cement slabs and bushes along the embankments, followed by the construction of a road at the intersection of 137th and 28th Street for truck access. This road is strictly for construction use; members and guests should not attempt to drive on it.
Travel and Alternate Routes
Members in Phases 4, 5, and 6 will need to exit through a park gate and re-enter through another gate during the construction. To assist with this, we will install VOIP call boxes at remote gates (Phases 4 and 6) to facilitate access for member guests and vendors. Staff will be available via VOIP to verify and remotely open gates.
Allegan County Off Road Vehicle (ORV) Ordinance Update
We also want to inform you about the Off Road Vehicle Ordinance adopted by the Allegan County Board of Commissioners. Effective July 1, 2021, this ordinance regulates the operation of ORVs on county roads to ensure safety and compliance with state regulations.
Key Points of the ORV Ordinance
- Purpose: To regulate ORV operation on county roads in alignment with Michigan’s Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act.
- Operation Rules:
- ORVs must travel on the far right of county roads and not exceed 25 mph.
- Operators need a valid license and ORV safety certificate.
- Youth under 12 cannot operate ORVs on roads; those under 18 must have adult supervision and an ORV safety certificate.
- ORVs must have specific safety equipment and meet noise emission standards.
For further details on the ordinance, please refer to the Allegan County Board of Commissioners’ website or contact local authorities.
Note: Sandy Pines does not recommend using golf carts on the road during the construction period. We suggest utilizing your car for transportation around the park once the project begins to ensure safety.
Thank you for your continued understanding and cooperation as we carry out the dam project and navigate these updates. Your safety and enjoyment of Sandy Pines remain our top priorities. Should you have any questions or require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
The Sandy Pines Team
