March is an exciting time of year.  Being a baseball fan, March is the heart of Spring Training where every team is putting in the hard work to achieve their goals to have a successful season.  It is a fresh start where everyone is undefeated and a possible champion. Yes, even our hometown Detroit Tigers! It also means we are getting close to another new season at our beloved Sandy Pines and Lake Monterey Golf Course where we want to deliver on our mission to provide a happy and safe environment where families and friends create a lifetime of memories.

Our wonderful staff continues to work hard to prepare for your return.  I cannot say enough or thank our staff enough for how they have welcomed me into the Sandy Pines and Lake Monterey Golf Course family.  We truly have a great staff and great people on our team.  We are absolutely blessed to have this team.

After our North Shore Center FEMA Storm Shelter groundbreaking in January, we have made fantastic progress.  If you are not familiar with this project, please see the North Shore Center update in this issue and our new North Shore Center Page at for renderings and updates. This will be an awesome addition to our park with areas for adult recreation activities, a library, a Board of Directors room for planning sessions, a large area to hold our Board of Director meetings and a warming kitchen for those who may wish to utilize the space for specific events.  We are very excited to have this available in our 2021 season which all of you know will be our 50th Anniversary.

Ben and the hard-working maintenance crew are also working on many projects.  New playground equipment is being installed by the picnic pavilion. The recreation center is being painted with fresh new colors. Many of the Convenience Centers are being refreshed. The team has also focused on beach repair in some areas around the lake.  They continue to do great work. When you get a chance, please send your thanks.

Our Public Safety, Security, and Emergency Services teams are training their staff in order to better serve our community during the season.  Keith Gravelink our Director of Security Services and his team are being trained on de-escalation, ICE Rescue, Medical First Responder (MFR) and many more important safety areas.  Steve Deyarmond our Emergency Services Director provided excellent CPR and First Aid training in early February. This annual training is great for the team to polish or refresh their CPR and First Aid skills.  Thank you Orland & Kathy from Wayland Area EMS for assisting Steve with this training. Many of our awesome staff are trained and ready to spring into action if needed. When you get a chance, please stop in to say hello and get to know the Public Safety Officers that are looking out for our community’s health and safety.

On February 8, 2020, our 6th Annual Winter Fest was held with record attendance.  Many thanks to Gerda Pitcher and all who volunteered for planning, arranging, and delivering this wonderful event.  Recreation events and calendars are being finalized by Nikki Hoogewind for the summer. Please be on the lookout for volunteer sign ups, job openings and other requests to support many of these great Sandy Pines and Lake Monterey Golf Course events during the season. The success of our events is based on our great volunteers.

Jamie Bogema our new HR Assistant is working with local organizations to kick off our Sandy Pines and Lake Monterey Golf Course Community Outreach Program.  Our first event is scheduled this month, March 2020.  The purpose of these events is to build strong, lasting relationships with our community neighbors while showing how caring Sandy Pines and Lake Monterey Golf Course can be by supporting our communities.  A few of the organizations we have reached out to are Habitat for Humanity, Kids’ Food Basket, Project Hope and Sylvia’s Place.  Stay tuned for more information on how you may be able to support these organizations along side our wonderful staff.  This will be a fantastic opportunity to extend our support into our surrounding communities.

Our next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Friday, March 20 at 2:00 pm. The location, agenda and details will be posted online at  I cannot express enough how blessed we are to have great leadership on our current board.  We are aligned on making certain we all have the best interest of the park in mind through our actions, decisions and motives. In the short time I have been here, they have been a great resource to bounce off ideas and concepts.  Their governance, experience and knowledge of not only this wonderful park, but other areas of their backgrounds have been a great resource to tap.  We are truly working as one to make Sandy Pines and Lake Monterey Golf Course the best place to be.

Lastly, we cannot make all this happen without being blessed by our heavenly father.  A mentor of mine left me the following saying: “Good Morning! This is God. I will be handling all your problems today. I will not need your help, so, relax and have a great day”.  I start and end my day reading this gift.  We are blessed to have great leadership, great members and great staff here at Sandy Pines and Lake Monterey Golf Course.  All the hard work in our spring training will be to serve our members. But we cannot forget who we truly serve.  It’s getting close to Ready, Set, Relax!

God Bless
